Expenses

We separate our expenses as follows:

1.) What does one need to get ready to hit the road?
2.) How much do our airplane tickets cost?
3.) What do we spend in each country per day?

1.) What does one need to get ready to hit the road?

We needed to buy gear, such as a tent, hammocks and a stove. Then Panos bought a backpack, a sleeping mat and hiking boots.
You see, how much you spend for the preparation really depends on how much gear you already have and how much you wanna invest in new things. If you are interested in a detailed list of our expenses, please contact us.

2.) How much do our airplane tickets cost? Here are some flight we booked (prices are always per person).
310 € Greece to the States
102 € States to Cuba
133 € Australia to Indonesia
But again, it depends on how flexible you are to purchase the cheapest flights. For more details check here.

3.) What do we spend in each country per day?
This is the most interesting part because this is where one can really save some money.
To travel you have three big categories:

- Food and drinks
- transportation
- accommodation

The goal is to keep all three as low as possible. That means no restaurants, no partying, no touristy sightseeing, no hostels, no expensive transportation.

But what do you do then? Connect with locals, cook by yourself or stick to street food, sleep in your tent, hammock or on people's couches, try to get lifts and explore the places by simply going for walks. Then there is the category miscellaneous, in which we sort gear we buy, entrance fees, maps, books, etc.

  1. For zero cost accomodation... does it mean both of you never stay at hostel during that trip ? And where did you stay ? In a tent ?
