# 77 - Yucay, Sacred Valley

After Abancay we hitched our way to the sacred valley of the Incas to the village of Yucay. The last ride that brought us into the village was an old VW beetle that was missing part of its floor craftily concealed with a carpet (!). In Yucay, Douglas our couchsurfer was expecting us and welcomed us into his big home with his whole family. Nikoletta tried cooking peas in a pot but due to the high altitude the food took more than double the time to get ready. We didn’t expect that..

We went for walks around the area where ancient Inca ruins were everywhere. We saw their agricultural fields, called chacras, worked in the traditional way with water channelled into each one in a controlled fashion. We witnessed an ancient solar watch in action and put some cochinillo, natural lipstick dye, on Nikoletta’s lips.
