# 38 - What we ate in Cuba

The effects of the communist regime became even more apparent especially when it came to our eating habits. Food shortages, the lack of variety or even the complete absence of products and the use of powdered milk instead of liquid were some of the instances that struck us as odd.

Despite the simplicity which characterised their dishes using basic ingredients, their meals were quite rich. When we learned how to spot local food joints we were able to locate cheap and delicious food.

Nevertheless, we didn't like the almost non-existent standards of hygiene when it came to storing and preparing the meals. Because of that we both decided to become vegetarians for the duration of our stay on the island.

We loved trying new things like guarapo (juice from sugar cane), plantains (sweet fried banana), tamales (paste of corn boiled in leaves), boniato (sweet potato) and frituras (fried corn dough). The common dish comida criolla contained rice with black beans, bananas, plantains, avocados, boniato and cucumber.

Pressing sugar canes..

.. and getting glasses from severed bottles (careful you don't cut yourself!)
