# 37 - Coastline back to Havana

We had a few days left to explore the villages on the north coast on our way back to Havana.
From Varadero we went to Matanzas and stayed there one night in a Preuniversitario (Pre) thanks to an understanding night guard who let us sleep at the entrance of the Pre. We shared some rum with him and decided to leave him with the rest half of the bottle which he gladly accepted!

Then we went to Guanabo by local bus which we shared with military personnel standing for an hour in a packed vehicle with no real means of holding yourself from any useful spot to beat the inertia of the curves. In Guanabo we met a lovely Cuban family who invited us to play domino with them and share (surprise surprise) more rum.

The next day we went to Santa Maria del Mar where we stayed for three days on the grounds of a state-owned restaurant making friends with yet more guards and employees who were overly eager at times to protect our backpacks by locking them in a room with no access until the next morning. We helped cleaning the place, did some gardening and got plenty of food in return.
