# 99 - Different time zones

Another struggle was the time difference in each country. More than once we got a little confused. GMT, UTC, DST, OMG, WTF. Ok, let’s break this down.

GMT is “Greenwich Mean Time”. England is basically zero. From there you go west and -1 for each time zone or east +1 for each time zone. UTC is “Coordinated Universal Time” and the exact same thing as GMT, just with a more fancy name.

Then there is DST, daylight saving time. In Europe we say “winter time” and “summer time”. But how about tropical countries, where they don’t have four seasons? Or countries in the southern hemisphere, where winter and summer is the other way around? So let’s agree that “winter time” means “currently not in DST” and “summer time” means “currently in DST”.

So far we changed time zones seven times!!! We started travelling in summer and many countries were in DST then. Let’s check the list below to have a closer look. Carefully though, it’s only valid for December 2019, since not all countries change their time on the same day. Some don’t even change it at all.
